How scientists work with dangerous viruses? The example of MERS-CoV

The laboratories of the RLASB are prepared to work with very dangerous pathogens, especially if they can be transmitted to humans. This video shows in two minutes how you work in a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory with the MERS-CoV virus.

MERS-CoV is a virus that causes the disease of the Respiratory Syndrome of the Middle East. It emerged in Saudi Arabia in 2013 and is mainly found in animals such as camels and camels without causing any harm. In addition, there are other animals such as llamas, alpacas and pigs that can be carriers. For humans, this virus is deadly, so it can only be manipulated under conditions of high biosecurity and biocontainment.

In the IRTA-CReSA, one of the nodes of the ICTS RLASB, this virus is investigated by developing models of the disease with animals in order to develop vaccines to prevent transmission to humans. We invite you to visit one of the laboratories where you work with this pathogen in NBS3 conditions.
