Last September staff from the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) from Nova University Lisbon held a Mobility Agreement Staff mobility for Training at BSL-3 infrastructure of IRTA-CReSA, especially to visit the Arthropod Containment Level 3 infrastructure.

Guided by Dr. Núria Busquets, researcher of the arbovirus group, and Dr. Xavier Abad, Head of the Biocontainment Unit, Dr. Dinora Lopes and Dr. Ana Catarina Alves from IHMT visited the insect biosafety facilities. The main objective was to learn about the safety procedures associated and animal experimentation and the procedures and protocols for the experimental infections.

The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT), will start the implementation of an insectary, where will be manipulated several species of arthropods infected with Biohazard level 3 human pathogens, within 1 and 2 months and expect to have a functional infrastructure by the end of the year. For them, it was an opportunity to learn and discuss standard operational procedures related with biosafety and maintenance of the insectary and animal facility and experimental infections, security and legal procedures for future certification procedures.

IHMT has a long history on vector-borne diseases studies both using field and experiment approaches at different levels of security. However, they consider that this visit can offer the opportunity to be in contact with similar running infrastructure and researchers that would increase the chances of success and optimization of security measures and process.
